Echoes at the Moscow Biennale — A Sonic Dialogue in Space
In 2017, Canadian sculptor Husam Chaya presented Echoes at the 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art. The installation stood in Zaryadye Park, a major cultural landmark in central Moscow. The project was realized in partnership with the Moscow Public Art Fund, which promotes public engagement with contemporary art.
Echoes consists of nine stainless steel structures. Chaya arranged them in a geometric formation that invites visitors to enter and move through the space. As a result, the audience does not simply observe the work—they experience it from within.
The reflective surfaces interact with light, sky, and movement. From a distance, the installation appears monumental and calm. Up close, however, it becomes immersive and intimate. The work blurs the boundary between sculpture and environment.
At its core, Echoes explores the transformation of sound. Chaya designed the installation as an acoustic chamber. When visitors speak or whisper, the metal surfaces capture and redirect their voices. The sound shifts, amplifies, and returns in unexpected ways. Consequently, sound becomes material. Perception becomes sculptural.
Presented alongside major international artists, Echoes attracted wide public attention. Visitors photographed the work, entered its geometry, and shared their encounters. Over time, the installation became a recognizable landmark within the Biennale’s urban landscape.
Location
In 2023, Echo found its permanent home in the heart of Moscow, beginning a new phase in its evolution.
Now embedded within the city’s urban core, the installation continues its dialogue with the public, merging reflection, sound, and movement with the pulse of everyday life.
