The Challenge
In 2011, Husam Chaya created Echo for the Changchun International Sculpture Symposium in Changchun, China, where the installation was commissioned by the City of Changchun. The project marked a decisive moment in the artist’s practice, signaling his transition from marble to monumental stainless steel sculpture.
Echo is a nine-element installation designed to activate space through human presence. The work becomes complete only when viewers enter its boundaries and produce sound. As voices move through the steel forms, the structures capture and redirect the vibrations, transforming sound into a spatial and perceptual experience.
A video of the installation demonstrates this phenomenon, showing how public interaction activates the sculpture and reveals its acoustic dimension.
Location
If you are visiting Changchun, discover Echo at Changchun World Sculpture Park, one of China’s largest public sculpture parks and a landmark of international public art. Step inside the nine monumental stainless steel forms and experience how your own voice activates the sculpture and returns as an echo, transforming sound into space within the landscape.
