Ascension – Marble Sculpture, Aley, Lebanon
Ascension marks the first articulation of vertical tension as a structural language in Husam Chaya’s work. Carved from a 13-ton block of marble and commissioned by the City of Aley, Lebanon, the sculpture confronts the problem of lifting mass without denying its weight.
Rather than simply rising, the form appears to strain against gravity. The stone resists, compresses, and gradually releases, generating ascent through tension rather than illusion. Balance emerges through controlled subtraction, not assembly. Elevation is achieved by negotiating weight, not escaping it.
Seen in retrospect, Ascension anticipates Chaya’s later monumental practice: gravity treated as a force to engage, space activated through compression, and verticality constructed as architecture rather than gesture.
